About Me

Hi, I'm Michael. I recently finished both my MSc in Computer Science and MBA at UAB. Most of my work has lived somewhere between software engineering, machine learning, research, and teaching.

I've had the chance to work on some really good teams and build useful things at places like Apple, Motion, DarkTower, UAB, EDPA, and Central Six. A lot of that work has been full-stack engineering or tooling work, but I've also spent a lot of time around ML systems, data work, and research code.

At UAB, I also spent eight semesters as a teaching assistant across classes from the 100 level up through graduate courses. That ended up being one of the most rewarding parts of school for me. I like building things, but I also like helping people understand how those things work.

I've also been lucky enough to contribute to open source projects including Apple's Container, Meta's PyTorch, Nvidia's Dynamo, and Astral's UV. More broadly, I'm interested in software development, AI/ML, business, finance, and medicine, so my projects tend to bounce across a few different areas.

This site is where I keep a lot of that work in one place. If something here is interesting to you, feel free to reach out.

The Site

Why it exists

This site started as a personal home on the web after it originally lived on GitHub Pages under `michaelgathara.github.io`.

Over time it turned into a place for projects, experiments, references, and a few side pages where I try things before deciding whether they should be public.

Extra domains

I picked up a few related domains mostly to make the site easier to remember and easier to share with people.

  • Gathara.org
  • Mikegtr.com
  • Mikegathara.com

Short links

Some social and external profiles are routed through this domain, so short paths like `michaelgathara.com/twitter` can send people to the right place.
